The Bill Brown Creative Workshops
Embedded with Churchill College, for the benefit of its community, The Bill Brown Creative Workshops are a student-driven space for creativity and innovation.
Opened in October 2024, it provides all skill levels and disciplines with the opportunity to create, develop, and implement projects according to both their ideas and the latest technology.
With equipment such as 3D printing, laser cutters and computer-aided-design sitting within workshopping spaces, students can test and explore projects with tools and support on hand from the BBCW Technician, Jonathan Woolf.
With the support of College Fellows specialising in subjects including Architecture, History of Art, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Plant Sciences, the Bill Brown Creative Workshops provide a “maker space” near the front (Storey’s Way) entrance to the College.

Meet the BBCW Technician
Jonathan’s role at the Bill Brown Creative Workshops is to show students how to use the facilities, to help them create, innovate, and to support and unlock the benefits of inter-disciplinary working. He joins the College after years of experience working at community workshop Makespace Cambridge.
Meet the BBCW Director,
As the Founding Director of the BBCW, Barry is responsible for overseeing, facilitating, and programming all activities in the Creative Workshops. His role is to engage the College community, including students, Fellows and staff, in the Creative Workshops and Project Space, and work to create a multidisciplinary community transcending disciplinary and Tripos boundaries. This includes the delivery of supported projects, the development and implementation of workshops, and the programme for the Project Space. Barry was Interdisciplinary Fellow at Kettle’s Yard before becoming Director of Studies in History of Art and Curator of Works of Art at Churchill College.
Support the Bill Brown Creative Workshops
We’re grateful to our funders who have made this facility possible. This includes a major gift from the Bill Brown Charitable Trust, as well as donations from other supporters and alumni. We are seeking to build an endowment that will fund running costs and support the full-time technician and part-time director needed to deliver the project’s unique and ambitious aims.
Every gift made in support of the Bill Brown Creative Workshops can make a difference. For example, 23 people giving £30 a month for three years, with the addition of Gift Aid, would support a dedicated technician for one year.
