Working at Churchill

Churchill College employs around 175 members of non-academic staff, who work in various ways to support the College’s aims and values: being a friendly, welcoming and progressive place where academic excellence and students thrive. Our staff are essential to the quality of the experience and service Churchill College provides.

Whether you work in Catering and Events, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Grounds and Gardens, Admin, Finance or Computing, everyone is part of the team.

Working culture

Our staff surveys show staff working at Churchill value and appreciate the friendly community and atmosphere here. We value of our staff; we provide pay-progression as staff grow more experienced, we invest in training and development and we recognise long service through additional holiday entitlement. Over a quarter of our employees have been with us for more than a decade; our longest serving staff member has been with us for over 40 years!

Salaries and performance review

Churchill College operates a role evaluation system and all posts are assigned a grade, within an incremental pay-scale. This provides the opportunity for pay-progression. If you are in the bottom part of the scale for your grade, you get an annual increment (meaning pay increases by roughly 3% over and above any cost-of-living increase). We also reward effort and achievement through our Performance Awards scheme, which gives pay increases in recognition of excellent performance. Cost-of living increases are negotiated with staff and union representatives once a year

Communication and representation

We aim to make sure staff can have their say. Staff representatives are elected to a Staff Consultative Committee, which discusses staff employment conditions, rules and regulations and the general interests and welfare of staff. Staff are also represented on a number of College committees, including the Health and Safety Committee, the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the College Council, which is the College’s main decision making body.

The College also has voluntary partnership agreement with the GMB Union and consults with the union on pay rises and changes to employment terms and conditions.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We are an equal opportunities employer, and welcome applications from a range of backgrounds. All staff who join are provided with training on Equality, Diversity & Inclusion.

We currently have around 20 nationalities represented in our staff. We provide free English as a Second or Other Language lessons to support staff who want to take them up.

We encourage flexible working and support Agile Working, where staff can work from home, where roles permit.

Staff benefits

Our staff benefit from a generous pension and healthcare package, free meal on duty, free use of the gym and sports facilities, well-being support including face to face counselling and a shopping discount scheme. We also offer free on-site parking for staff who need to drive to get to work.
