Often cited for his work on the twentieth-century Cambridge philosopher Bertrand Russell, Irvine has written about issues in logic and mathematics, ancient Greek philosophy, and the origins of the rule of law. He holds a PhD in philosophy from Sydney University and is a professor of philosophy and mathematics at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. He is a past vice-chair of the UBC Board of Governors, a past head of the Department of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science, and a past president of the BC Civil Liberties Association. His academic work has been translated into French, Spanish, Greek and Italian, and his play, “Socrates on Trial”, has been performed internationally. His most recent book (co-authored with Carl Hodge) is The Ethics and Economics of Liberal Democracies (Routledge, 2024).
