Dongfang Liang is a Professor of Hydrodynamics in the Department of Engineering. He was trained to be a hydraulic engineer at Tsinghua University. In the College, he is a Teaching Fellow and Director of Studies. In the Department of Engineering, Dongfang chairs the Civil Engineering Subject Group and teaches water engineering, environmental engineering and finite element method, as well as leading the engineering surveying and the structural design coursework. Dongfang undertakes research in hydrodynamics, hydro-environment, sediment transport, microfluidics and meshfree computational methods. In these fields, he has published around 300 peer-reviewed academic papers. His recent research includes nature-based flood risk management, marine renewable energy development and acoustophoretic manipulation of microparticles. Dongfang is a Chartered Engineer and is a co-chair of the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Cambridgeshire Branch. He believes that despite being an ancient discipline Civil Engineering still has an important role to play in modernising the UK’s aging infrastructure and achieving the net-zero emissions.
