During these testing times it’s reassuring to hear about all of the hard work being done by the Churchill Community to both manage and inform about the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as other work and achievements that have taken place. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.
COVID-19
Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter spoke about the rising cases of Covid-19 in the UK.
Past Fellow, Dr Stephen O’Rahilly (1992 – 2006) commented on a study which suggests a low birth weight makes COVID-19 patients three times more likely to have serious symptoms.

PhD Student Dr Chioma Achi won the early career researcher award at the University’s Vice Chancellor Research Impact and Engagement Awards. Chioma organised an engagement programme across Nigeria to strengthen the participation of poultry farmers in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
The College is flying the Pan-African flag throughout the month of October, to celebrate Black History Month.
Alumnus Dr Pan Hui (G04), has been named a 2020 Fellow by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Dr Hui has made significant contributions to multiple aspects of the field of mobile computing and communications.
Social psychologist Dr Sander van der Linden has been appointed by the APA President to serve on the new APA Task Force on Climate Change.
Materials Scientist Dr Manish Chhowalla commented on an article looking at how the next-generation of electronics will include an interconnect insulator.
Teaching Fellow and Engineer, Dr Tawfique Hasan’s work on a new family of inks that overcomes the “coffee ring effect” to facilitate inexpensive fabrication of next-generation electronics such as sensors, light detectors, batteries, and solar cells, has been featured in Design News.
