During these testing times it’s reassuring to hear about all of the hard work being done by the Churchill Community to both manage and inform about the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as other work and achievements that have taken place. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.
COVID-19
Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter commented on positive results from the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine, and spoke about how if the UK suffers the same number of deaths as it does during a bad flu season it will be a sign the country has done well in the ongoing battle against the pandemic.
Student Soren Hough (G19) had his article, COVID-19 is No Blessing in Disguise, published in The Commoner.

A new article, co-authored by Michael Blastland, Dr Alexandra Freeman, Professor Dame Theresa Marteau and Churchill Fellows Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter and Dr Sander van der Linden discusses five rules for evidence communication.
Animated Thinking – A Room in Mumbai, is a newly released short film on research led by our Fellow, Dr Minna Sunikka-Blank, exploring how women’s lives have been radically transformed by the transition from slum housing to high rise blocks in the largest city in India.
Economist Professor Diane Coyle spoke about the role of state and markets in tackling big policy questions.
Alumna Dr Emma Pauncefort (U07) is has founded the Critical Literacy Project, which seeks ways to empower all individuals to read critically and write well. One of their projects, The Digital Literacy Lab for Educators, is developing critical digital literacy skills in educators in low to middle income Commonwealth countries with the aim of empowering these individuals to pass these skills on.
