After 3 years of teaching in Melbourne, Australia, Bob travelled to England in 1966, by ship, to start a new job in Education. During the six-week voyage, a credit squeeze in the U.K. “froze” the funding for the position. His search for another “job” took him to The University of Cambridge and a meeting with Dr. T. P. Hoar in the Department of Metallurgy. He was offered a research assistantship and the opportunity to work towards a PhD. Bob was so thrilled!
His fiancée, Judy, left Australia for England in January 1967. They married in March, and their first child, Peter, was born in January 1969.
Bob appreciated the support of Churchill College and the recognition and inclusion of the wives of their Graduate Students. Friday nights became the “weekly night out” with delicious dinners ‘in Hall’ which were often followed by a Guest Speaker or a film. Particularly memorable was the talk on Sir Winston Churchill which was given by Lord Louis Mountbatten with Prince Charles (now King Charles ll) sitting in the front row!
Bob submitted his Dissertation in November 1969 on “Caustic Cracking of Mild Steel – An Electrochemical Approach”. The four years in Cambridge and Churchill College were the highlight of his life.
A year later, he was appointed to the position of Lecturer at the New South Wales Institute of Technology (now University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)). He went on to become Associate Professor, Head of the School of Physical Sciences, and a highly respected corrosion consultant.
While disappointed in the limited opportunity for research, Bob enjoyed working with students to inspire and enthuse them to share his passion for discovering knowledge and learning about science.
Bob is survived by his wife Judy, his sons, Peter and Greg, and grandchildren, Madeleine and Reilly.
