Churchill College is active in music-making, drama, and the visual arts. Sizarships are available to students to support this.

Music Sizarship

The Music Sizar oversees and promotes musical activities in the College and liaises with the Director of Music to arrange concerts. The Sizar organises and chairs meetings of the Music Society Committee and is the point of contact for members of the College wanting to use the Music Centre’s facilities. The Sizar has no formal responsibilities for Chapel music but may nevertheless wish to contribute to it in collaboration with the Organ Scholar (who is elected via the central University scheme). The Music Sizarship comes with an honorarium of £250 and may be held in addition to other music bursaries. The post runs for the calendar year.

Candidates for the Music Sizarship will be interviewed by the Senior Tutor, Director of Music and Director of Studies for Music Auditions in Michaelmas Term.

Theatre Sizarship

Churchill College offers a Theatre Sizarship of £150 per year open to undergraduates or postgraduate students of the College. The Sizarship is offered for one year from 1st January, with the possibility of extension for one further year.

The Theatre Sizar is expected to foster theatrical life in the College. In doing so, the Sizar will assist those teaching English in the College, and will be assisted by other members of the College. The Sizar will be expected to seek out and encourage theatrical talent in College in all departments of theatre, both technical and performing, to organise rehearsed readings and other activities to do with theatre, such as workshops (for which financial assistance may be available), to liaise with other societies as appropriate, to organise one production a year on the College premises, and to ensure that all activities are adequately publicised to junior and senior members. The Sizar will apply to the CCRFC for financial support for theatrical activities.

A large art studio is available in the garden of 76 Storey’s Way for all kinds of visual artwork, for drama rehearsals, scenery preparation, etc. It is administered jointly by the Theatre and Visual Arts Sizars.

The Theatre Sizar will normally live in College.

Visual Arts Sizarship

Churchill College offers a Visual Arts Sizarship of £100 per year open to undergraduates or postgraduate students of the College. The Sizarship is offered for one year from 1st January with the possibility of extension for one further year.

The Visual Arts Sizar will liaise with the Executive Officer of the Hanging Committee to encourage the visual arts in College, including assisting in arranging exhibitions. It is expected that the Sizar will serve ex officio on the Hanging Committee. There is, of course, scope for initiatives from the Sizar consistent with the general aim of promoting the visual arts.

Any Junior Member of the College (Undergraduate or Advanced Student) who expects to be in residence for the next two academic years is eligible to apply.

Bill Brown Creative Workshops Sizarship

Churchill College offers a Bill Brown Creative Workshops Sizarship of £100 per year open to undergraduates or postgraduate students of the College. The Sizarship is offered for one year from 1st January with the possibility of extension for one or two further years.

The Bill Brown Creative Workshops Sizar will liaise with the Director of the Workshops to encourage the use of the workshop space by students and the development of projects using the Workshops’ facilities. The Sizar shall also sit on the Bill Brown Creative Workshops Steering Committee.

After two terms of office (by 1 September), the Bill Brown Creative Workshops Sizar shall submit to the College Council (via the Senior Tutor) and to the Director of the Bill Brown Creative Workshops a brief report of what has been achieved during those two terms and details of plans for the final term of office.

The appointment will be made by a committee consisting of the Senior Tutor, Postgraduate Senior Tutor and the Director of the Bill Brown Creative Workshops.

Any Junior Member of the College (Undergraduate or Postgraduate ) who expects to be in residence for the next two academic years is eligible to apply.
